White Lisbon are Indispensable for a decent salad, with silvery skin and crisp, succulent stems that have a mild onion flavour with that characteristic 'bite'. Delicious when young, they take on a more pungent flavour as the bulbs swell. Sow little and often, fortnightly from March onwards, will give a good supply through the summer.

It is quick and easy to grow, cropping in 60 days. Although, traditionally the most popular Spring Onion for successional sowings can also be sown in autumn and over wintered for early spring harvests.

They are perfect for container growing and can be tucked into mixed containers or beds

A very popular dual purpose quick-growing variety for crisp, sweet, white pickling onions, often known as 'cocktail' onions. If you like a good size bulb on "spring" onions pull them young or leave to mature and crop as small onions for pickling they will grow well on almost any soil, even on light, poor land. They prefer a sunny position.

When to plant: March to September.
How to grow: Sow 0.5in (1.5cm) deep in rows 6in (15cm) apart. Keep well watered in dry weather.

No thinning is necessary.

Harvest: All year round as required.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Onion White Sweet Spanish Vegetable Seeds

Packet Content: 350 (1.24g)

A unique and versatile onion, our White Sweet Spanish onion is perfectly suited to grow in any climate or region! North or South, our White Sweet Spanish is the onion for you!

Mild, sweet and tasty, White Sweet Spanish produces onions with attractive, white flesh and thin necks in less than four months. These onions are best sautéed when fresh and not stored for too long.

Onions, like most vegetables, thrive in rich organic soil. Prior to planting, work 2 to 4 in. (5 to 10 cm) of compost or humus into the soil. Plant onion plants 4 to 6 inches apart.

Try to be careful about the fertilizers you use for onions. Onions tend to be more pungent when grown on soils with a high sulphur content. Choose a nitrate-based fertilizer over a sulphate-based fertilizer. Ask your local garden centre expert for the right fertilizer. The fertilizer bag, even on all-purpose fertilizers, 12-24-12 for example, may indicate the components used to formulate the fertilizer.

Onions may need lots of moisture at the beginning, but less when the bulbs are approaching full size. When the tops begin to fall over naturally, it's time to pull the onions up.

Harvest Instructions

Members of the onion family generally give a very obvious signal when they are ready to harvest. The tops fall over and the tips of the leaves start to turn brown. In addition, the bulbs are full size. Pull the onions, shake off any soil, but do not wash them or pull off any outside wrapper leaves.

Store them in a cool, dry, shaded area to cure for several days or up to 2 weeks if the weather is dry and not too hot. Then clip off the roots and tops leaving about one inch of the stem and brush off any remaining soil.

Storage Instructions

Store the onions in a very cool place (your basement or even an old refrigerator) trying to keep them between 35 and 55°F (1 and 12°C). The closer to 35 degrees the less chance the onions will sprout. Check your onions occasionally and use the ones showing signs of sprouting or softening right away. With good storage, your onion crop should last most of the winter.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Welsh Onion, Spring Onion 250 Vegetable Seeds

Product no.: SEEDV206

Currently unavailable

£0.89

Packet Content (approx.): 250 (0.5g)

Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) Perennial. Grown in the same way as chives. The taste is between the mild flavour of chives and the stronger one of onions. Green stemmed Spring onion with thick, hollow stems and just slightly enlarged bulbs. Clump forming and hardy. The name would suggest that this variety originates from Wales, but in fact it comes from Siberia. Can be harvested through the winter without protection.

Sowing & Planting:

  • Sow seed thinly in early to mid spring into a seed bed 2.5cm deep at a minimum temperature of 7oC, with rows 15cm apart. Alternatively sow under cover into modules in mid winter at a temperature of 10oC, harden seedlings off before transplanting.
  • Germination takes 14-21 days. Height 30cm.
  • As the seedlings begin to develop and look strong thin to 5cm apart. Once the seedlings reach 20cm in height and the thickness of a pencil they can be lifted and prepared for transplanting.
  • Prepare the main bed, using a dibber make deep planting holes of around 15cm deep and 15cm apart with 30cm between rows.
  • Lifting with a hand fork will minimise damage to the shanks. Once lifted trim the roots to 2.5cm and the leaves to 15-20cm.
  • Place one plant into each hole so that the growing point is at or just below the soil surface. It is not necessary to infill the holes but instead water well to settle the roots over time as the leeks grow the hole will fill itself.

Crop Care:

  • Keep beds weed free during the growing period. Once established do not water except in dry periods. In mid-late summer top dress with a high nitrogen fertilizer, or in late winter for the late crops.
  • To increase the length of white stem blanching is needed. Draw dry soil up around the stems when they are well developed. Ensuring no soil falls between the leaves.
  • Blanching will need to be done several times through the season finishing in October. Feeding will increase the thickness of the stems although late feeding is not advised.

Harvesting:

  • Early varieties are ready for harvest September to November. Begin harvesting early while still quite small to ensure a long harvest period. Mid season varieties can be lifted December to February with late varieties lifting February to April. As leeks are winter hardy they do not all need to be lifted at once and can be left in the ground during the winter months until they are needed.
  • Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Plant in the greenhouse in individual large pots, or 3 plants per growbag when 20cm (8in) high. Can be planted outdoors, 45cm (18in) apart once all frost risk has passed

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Well known Onion sets producing large bulbs.
Resistant to bolting.
Supplied in size 14-21mm.

Planting Growing Instructions
Planting onions from sets is by far an easier process than planting them from seeds. We supply all our onions as sets (baby onions) so as to make growing them a pain free process for all our customers. They should be planted in fertile/good quality soil that is well drained (this is important). Plant onions approx 4 inches apart or 6 inches for shallots, with the tip of the onion sets slightly above soil level. They should be planted in a row in March/April.

Cultural Instructions
They will start to sprout very quickly once planted, often as quickly as two to three weeks. Make sure that your local garden birds do not damage the rows and it is also a good idea to keep weed free once planted. Once they have finished sprouting the leaves will turn yellow, so lift them at this time and store in a cool dry place until they need to be planted again (they usually keep for up to 8 months).

Soil is best prepared the previous season with organic matter. Do not plant on a freshly manured bed.
Try to avoid planting in the same place as onions from current or previous year.
Sow March – End April in the UK...
Plant like small bulbs so that the tips are just showing above the soil 10cm apart with 20cm between rows. (Closer spacing will produce smaller mature onions)

Protect during early growth if you have squirrels or pigeons in the area.
Keep weed free.

(Please note onion sets are supplied by weight and exact counts of onion sets per packet will vary with the size of the sets.)
