Dierama Blackberry Bells Flower Seeds

Family: Iridaceae

Plant Classification: Hardy perennial

Height (approx.): 90cm - 1.2m

Common name: Angel's Fishing Rods

This vigorous hybrid was bred here between 'Cosmos' and Dierama robustum, inheriting some of the darkness from the former flower, but with much larger, deep purple-maroon flared trumpets on very tall, strong springy stems, arising from thick, strong, blade-like leaves. This fabulous plant, coming almost 100%25 true from seed, makes a strong, solid clump as it matures over the years!

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Sow September-November and February-April, in pots or trays of seed compost and place in a cold frame. Keep moist. Transplant seedlings to further pots or trays (in March) when large enough to handle. Grow on and plant out in flowering position, the following year, when the root system has developed. Alternatively, sow seed in a well-prepared seed bed and plant out in a well-drained flowering position in September. Flowers: July to August.

Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Plant in the greenhouse in individual large pots, or 3 plants per grow bag when 20cm (8in) high. Can be planted outdoors, 45cm (18in) apart once all frost risk has passed

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Dierama Blackbird Flower Seeds

Family: Iridaceae

Plant Classification: Hardy perennial

Height (approx.): 60cm

This is a group of exquisitely beautiful plants with gracefully arching, long, fine, hair-like stems. These bear on stalks, so slender that, even on a calm day they seem to be, like mobiles, in continual movement, drooping panicles of numerous, delightful, bell-like flowers. They are hardy but prefer a rich, well-drained position and shelter from cold winds. Particularly effective on the margin of ponds.

Perhaps the darkest flowered of all Dieramas is this splendid variety producing wiry stems and cascades of gorgeous, deep claret-mauve blooms. Comes fairly true from seed. 3-4 ft.

Compact clumps produce disproportionately large, deep pink flared trumpets on densely-packed delicate arching stems. Clumps will improve yearly but do not like to be moved.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Sow September-November and February-April, in pots or trays of seed compost and place in a cold frame. Keep moist. We exclusively offer these Dierama Plant World Jewels unique dwarf and medium-sized crosses between the pygmy D. pauciflorum, D. dracomontanum and D. igneum. These spectacular new flower forms are produced two to three weeks earlier than previous vareities, extending the flowering period of this in-vogue plant.

A mixture of colours - pinks and purples. Wand Flower or Angels' Fishing Rods Arching wands of pink flowers

Flowering Time: late spring to mid summer

Sowing: For best results, sow seeds onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. We recommend germinating at 15 to 20°C degrees. Although they can be sown at any time, these seeds may sometimes wait for spring before emerging, but spring sowing will obviously give them a full season of growth.

When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots and later into 13cm (5in) pots and overwinter in a frost free greenhouse or coldframe. The following spring gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 5cm (2in) deep and 38-45cm (15-18in) apart in a sunny spot on fertile well drained soil.

Suitable for the garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Helleborus Cottage Mixed is a wide and generous selection from all of the hellebores varieties and species on our list. All colours are included from white and yellows to deepest purples and spotted and mottled forms.

An inexpensive way to start a collection of these attractive favourites.

Planted en masse this carefully mixed selection of varieties and cultivars is sure to please.

Mainly evergreen in habit this lovely selection are perfect for ground cover - and with their late winter / early spring flowering will cheer up any garden. Flower colours include whites, yellows to purples - and even spotted and mottled forms.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Thrive in partial shade but will also perform well in either deeper shade or sun.
  • Prefer a moist but well drained soil and are particularly good on alkaline soils.
  • Being mixed varieties, flowers can appear from late winter into spring.
  • Grow to a height of between 1- 2 feet (30 - 60 cm).

Sowing: Sow these seeds IMMEDIATELY you receive them, WHENEVER THIS MAY BE! They need SEVERAL MONTHS in damp compost, (NOT DRY IN A FRIDGE) before they will germinate as the season naturally warms, usually between January and March in the Northern Hemisphere, regardless of when they are sown. Keep the seed tray in a cold place, and check every few weeks. They are COLD germinators! Never, ever, use any artificial heat as this will prevent them from germinating, and ultimately kill them! Keep ungerminated seed pots for at least two years!

Suitable for the Garden, vegetable garden, allotments, borders and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Sawyers Black is a popular variety of Heartsease, which belongs to the Violet genus (Viola tricolour 'Sawyers Black'). This variety is an Flower that typically grows as an Annual/Perennial, which is defined as a plant that can matures and completes its lifecycle over the course of one year or more. Sawyers Black is known for growing to a height of approximately 15.0 cm

Hardy annual
Sow: February - March / June - September
Flowers: Early summer / winter, spring
Height: 15cm

Lovely velvety purple black flowers

Sow: into plug trays ideally to prevent root disturbance, or seedling trays. Germination takes around 7 days at 17-20o
C, when sown onto an open seed-sowing compost, and covered lightly with vermiculite.

Light is not necessary for germination. Temperatures above 21 oC will reduce germination, so in Summer choose a cool location away from direct sunlight, better still use a temperature - and humidity-controlled germination room.

Control water levels; too wet and the young seedlings will stretch. Start moderate liquid feeding the plug plants after 2-3 weeks. Grow on at 17 oC maximum to avoid stretching of the young plants.

After 5-6 weeks the young plants are ready for transfer into 6- or 9-packs, or 8cm pots, or else can be used for baskets and containers. As soon as the roots are visible at the bottom of the container, it is advisable to move Summer-raised plants outside, to avoid stretching of the plants. Stand them on a clean surface e.g. new woven plastic, to avoid picking up persistent diseases such as Theilaviopsis. Maintain a liquid feed programme.
