Seed Count: 6

Ornamental edible, an ideal patio pepper with compact habit 45cm. Masses of conical shiny orange fruit, 7cm, sweet with a hint of heat.

Yes, it's a gorgeous little bush studded all over with shiny red-orange rockets?too pretty to hide away among rows of vegetables. But it's very tasty too, with a hint of heat. The 3" fruit are sweet and delicious, either pickled or on salad platters. Height 18". Harvest about 70 days after plants are set out in the garden. Grows best in full sun.

Planting:

Sow pepper seeds indoors in containers 8 to 10 weeks before the projected last frost in cold climates. When the soil has warmed and the night temperatures are no longer dipping below 55°F/13°C, the seedling should be set outdoors about 2 ft. apart.

Harvesting:
Continuously harvesting peppers will induce more fruit production throughout the growing season. Pick sweet peppers regardless of colour. They can be picked at any time. Hot peppers can also be picked at any colour, but if you plan on drying the hot peppers allow the fruit to fully ripen and reach full colour. Use garden pruner's to cut the stem above the fruit to minimize damage to both the plant and the pepper itself.

CAUTION: Use rubber gloves, or clean the hot peppers under running water to avoid skin burn from the pepper juice.

Plant Growth:
For best growth, Peppers need a long, warm growing season. If temperatures drop below 60°F, especially when there are fruits present on the stem, your harvest can be damaged.

Blooming:
Blooms star to bell-shaped solitary or clustered flowers in yellow, white, greenish white, purple, or purple tinged.

Soil and Irrigation:
Peppers thrive in soils that are constantly and thoroughly moist, but not soaked.

Fertilization:
When peppers have flowers on them, feed with a complete and balanced liquid fertilizer twice per month.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers. Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season.

Regular feeding is recommended.

Description

The popular Californian Wonder produces plentiful good shaped peppers which have a mild sweet flavour. Ripening from a deep green to red.

Best time to plant May onwards

Growing Instructions

Plant 45cm apart in a sunny but sheltered position in well drained soil. They prefer to be in a greenhouse but can be grown in a pot in a conservatory or in a sunny spot on your patio but you will not get much of a crop outside. Peppers like water, keep them well watered until established and in dry weather (but not soggy). If we have an intensely hot summer (which is rare I know) you will need to give them a bit of shade to protect their delicate leaves. Once they reach roughly 30cm they will need staking for support as the peppers start to grow. Feed them once you see at least 2 or 3 peppers growing NOT before. If you only see one pepper growing and its about 5cm and no sign of any others growing, pick it and this should promote more to grow, remember not to feed it until you see 2 or 3 growing.

Plant height up to 50cm

Harvest June to October (When they are swollen and glossy roughly 80-100 Days from planting)

Tip

All peppers suffer from cold feet so they are better grown in a grow bag or pot/container because they warm up quicker than soil.

Regular feeding is recommended

Poseidon F1 Sweet Pepper Vegetable Seeds

Product no.: SEEDV155

In stock
Delivery period: 1 working days

Packet Content (approx.): 10

Sweet Peppers belong to the genus Capsicum, but are very different from commercial pepper which is another species.  Modern varieties have been selected for fruit size and shape, habit of growth, seasonality and resistance to certain diseases, especially virus. Sweet peppers have very similar needs to the Tomato, although light levels are not so critical, owing to the lower temperatures at which Peppers should be grown to induce fruit setting.

Combining crisp texture with a sweet tang, Poseidon peppers have universal appeal the sweetness and flavor increase when the fruit color usually green at first, ripens to its final red, yellow, orange, tones. Peppers will thrive in well-drained, fertile soils with a pH of 6.5. Abundant phosphorus and calcium is needed for the best results.

Propagation

Sow seed March and April in open compost at high temperatures (24-28C), as this gives uniform, speedy germination.  Prick off into blocks or pots around 8-10cm (the larger size may be desirable for delayed planting of the early heated crop).  Give plants good light and space out as required, holding temperatures at not less than 22-24C if possible.  Lower temperatures will suffice, but planting can be delayed.  Time of propagation can vary from 4-6 weeks under best conditions, to 8 weeks or more.  Note later comments about fruit setting at lower temperatures.

Planting and Spacing

This can be at 45cm square where four shoots are left with no pruning (supporting the crop as necessary with horizontal strings), down to 40cm where 2 shoots are taken and plants trimmed by lateral stopping to 1-3 leaves.  Plants are set out when roots are crowding and ideally when they are in flower.  Root zone temperatures should be high (22-24C) for maximum growth.  For Rockwool culture, root zone warming can be used beneath the slabs.  In fact peppers prefer higher root zone temperatures and lower air temperatures. Although responding to good Ariel day temperatures, fruit set is better at lower temperatures. General recommendations are 15-17C night, 18-20C day, ventilating at 23C in sunny weather.  In dull weather, temperatures should be slightly lowered.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season.

This exceedingly sweet pepper has nearly all the same characteristics as the California Wonder, except for its color.  As its name might suggest, this 5?  tall perennial pepper is bright gold, changing to orange-red when mature.  Its thick, hearty inside is excellent for a variety of uses such as salsas, salads, stuffing and cooking.

The Golden Wonder Pepper plant grows about 2-3? in height and should be spaced about 1-3? apart.  It produces upright, sturdy plants that are high in Vitamins A and C.  Just like golden blondes, Golden Wonder Peppers love the sun!  Whatever your cooking needs might be, you can?t go wrong with the Golden Wonder.

Sow seeds indoors ¼" deep. Peppers germinate best in warm soil, so gentle bottom heat may be helpful until seedlings emerge. Wait to transplant outdoors until soil is warm.

Growing Peppers:

Peppers, like tomatoes, grow in well-drained fertile soil

Almost all peppers have the same requirements for successful growth.  Plant them in good, well-drained, fertile soil ? and make sure they get lots of sunlight and a good inch of water per week.  In many ways, they mimic the same requirements needed for growing great tomatoes.

At Planting Time:

We plant all of our peppers with a good shovel full of compost in the planting hole, and then give them a good dose of compost tea every few weeks for the first 6 weeks of growth.  We also mulch around each of our pepper plants with a good 1 to 2? thick layer of compost.

Peppers often like to take their sweet time germinating. They can be up in a week, and some will take almost a month. Even with paper towel germination testing, they can take long. I am not sure why, but it is a normal occurrence. So plan and make sure you start them early enough! Also, remember they like heat to germinate so make sure you have a heating mat or something to keep the soil warm. Placing them up on top of the fridge often works too since it is normally warmer up there.

Peppers do very well grown in pots.
