Cabbage Golden Acre Earliest Of All is an excellent early summer ball head cabbage produced on a compact plant which is great for successional sowing and will mature in approximately 10-12 weeks. it is therefore, perfect for pots as well as the main vegetable plot.

  • The tight green heads have great texture and flavour and are delicious cooked or shredded raw in salads.
  • successionally from February to June. Early sowings should be under a cloche, in a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse.

Sowing: March to June

Cabbage should be grown in full sun and well-drained, rich, humus soil with a pH of about 6.5. The main crop beds should be dug over and firmed a few weeks before planting. Seeds can be sown either into modules or a seed tray 12mm (½in) deep at 21°C (70°F) all under cover. Germination usually takes 7-12 days to emerge. This is a more reliable method than direct sowing because environmental stresses are more easily managed, watering can be more carefully monitored.

  • Seedlings are ready for transplanting when they have 5 or 6 leaves.
  • The spacing between plants depends on the end product, for compact heads space at 30cm (12”) & 45cm (18”) for large heads

An easy to grow and low maintenance plant that will give confidence to the first time gardener as it produces bucket loads of veg. Plant out in April - late May when the chance of frost has passed. Incorporate plenty of organic matter to feed the plant and help retain water.

  • As they are hungry feeders, feed them every 14 days with a potash rich fertilizer. Keep well watered but do not wet the fruit.

Harvesting: from early July to September.

Harvest cabbages by cutting close to ground level with a kitchen knife. If you cut a cross on the stump a secondary crop of small cabbages can appear from the cut surface.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
