Cabbage ‘January King’ is well established hybrid Savoy very hardy variety, exceptional flavour and keeping properties will withstand cold and wet!. Flattened, 3-5 pound green heads have burgundy-marked wrappers.

These hardy varieties hunker down during the cold temperatures and heavy rains of winter, waiting to take off when light and warmth return.

Grows best in well cultivated soil liberally with manure the previous autumn. If the weather is dry, water in well when transplanting. Firm planting will ensure solid hearts.

If you plant too early, you may get lightweight heads with loosely packed leaves that won't store well.

Cabbage should be grown in full sun and well-drained, rich, humusy soil with a pH of about 6.5. Sow seeds in containers within a few days after July 4 so that the seedlings will be between three and four weeks old when transplanted in mid-August. This is a more reliable method than direct sowing because environmental stresses are more easily managed, watering can be more carefully monitored, and cats can't mess with them.

or Sow thinly direct into a finely raked seedbed at a depth of 13mm (½").

Germination 12-20 days.

Transplant with a trowel or dibber when large enough to handle, allowing 45cm (18") between plants each way.

• Sowing to cropping in 26-28 weeks.
• Harvest December-February.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
