Sow 20-30 seeds into a 10-12cm pot using a free draining compost and cover seed lightly after sowing. For spring and summer crops, sow direct into prepared seed beds in the kitchen garden or greenhouse border, and this is the best growing technique for spring and summer crops.

Sow outdoors sprinkle seeds 1/2 inch apart in a 2 to 4 inch wide row covering lightly or broadcast sow.

Packet Content (approx.): 520 (1.5g)

Closely related to Mibuna; pencil thin white stalks with serrated, dark green leaves. A very prolific cropper which will reform after cutting.

Oriental vegetables have led to the wider culinary use of speciality leaves to salads. The colour, texture, shape and flavour adds interest to babyleaf salad mixes

This oriental brassica is both fast growing and highly productive if given the right conditions. It requires an open situation with fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil (pH 6.5 or 5.8 on peaty soils). Being fast-growing the soil must be rich in organic matter and high in nitrogen.

It is susceptible to excessive salt concentrations, and never does well in poor, dry soil.

Being generally shallow-rooted, water is important so water little and often.

Radish F1 Red Stemmed is very temperature-sensitive, especially in relation to bolting, but improved F1 cultivars and crop management should minimise this risk.

Temperature during propagation should be 18oC min., then when planting out in modules at the 2-3 leaf stage, a min. of 7oC is required.

The crop can be stored in a cold store at 1oC and 90-95% R.H. for 2-3 weeks.

Cultural Instructions Sow from June Minimum germination temperature is 18oC, with an optimum of 20-25oC. Sow into blocks or modules - do not transplant bare-root seedlings.

Germination should take about 7-12 days. Plant up the young plants at approx 30cm within and 30-40cm between rows.

The Babyleaf can be harvest in 30-35 days main crop matures around 8-10 weeks after sowing.

Often expensive when shop bought, so grow your own - it's easy from seed and more satisfying!

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season.

Regular feeding is recommended.

Family: Botanical Brassica juncea

A hybrid Green Frills type with extra fine, bright green, well textured fronds. Unlike the standard Green Frills, flavour is quite pungent.

Babyleaf

Babyleaf is a convenient way of describing the optimum growth stage of many different leafy vegetables when cut to provide an individual leaf for salads. This is normally within the range 8-14cm in size. The popularity of bagged salads in recent years has risen sharply due the excellent quality of the components, and over 90% of households in the UK regularly buy their salads in this form.

Viridis Hortus screen many varieties for their suitability for the babyleaf market, examining leaf size and shape, speed of growth, size of cut area (normally stem thickness) ease of harvest, flavour, colour and general appearance, and of course shelf life after harvest.

Do ask us if you want more information about any of our babyleaf products and their suitability for your needs.

Mustard Pizzo BabyLeaf Salad Vegetable Seeds

Packet Content (approx.): 900 (1.5g)

Recommended as a winter salad variety by garden writer Joy Larkcom and proving to be very popular with gardeners, Mustard ?Pizzo? is a new mustard green with that is beautifully mild flavoured when young and hot once mature.

The bright green, voluptuous curving leaves are deeply-cut and serrated. They are beautiful as a baby leaf, give volume to winter salads and are very good for bunching.

Sowing: Sow under cover February to May or sow direct April to October Mustard seeds can be sown practically year round. Plant little and often, every two weeks for continuous supply.

Sow sparingly in shallow drills 6 to 12mm (¼ to ½ in) deep. Space seeds 2.5cm (1in) apart for cut-and-come-again salad or 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) for whole plant production. Seeds germinate in 5 to 10 days at temperatures between 7 to 30°C (45 to 85°F)

Adequate spacing is most important when growing plants to full size. This is easy to accomplish by simply thinning plants as they begin to get crowded in the garden.

Harvesting: 20 days for babyleaf, 45 days to maturity

Mustard plants can be harvested for baby leaf once the leaves are 5cm (2in) tall. For milder leaves, pick young, they are best cropped at around 15cm (6in) for salads.

The plants will grow to around 30 to 45cm (12 to 18in) tall. Mature leaves can be boiled or steamed or braised in a pot with a little butter and garlic. Use scissors or a knife rather than pulling the leaves to avoid damaging the plant. Keep picking regularly to prevent flowers running to seed. Pull and compost the plants once hot weather arrives in the summer, as mustard greens become tough and bitter.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Mustard Red Lion BabyLeaf Vegetable Seeds

Babyleaf is a convenient way of describing the optimum growth stage of many different leafy vegetables when cut to provide an individual leaf for salads. This is normally within the range 8-14cm in size. The popularity of bagged salads in recent years has risen sharply due the excellent quality of the components, and over 90% of households in the UK regularly buy their salads in this form. Viridis Hortus screen many hundreds of varieties for their suitability for the babyleaf market, examining leaf size and shape, speed of growth, size of cut area (normally stem thickness) ease of harvest, flavour, colour and general appearance, and of course shelf life after harvest.

Mustard, Red Lion is a darker red selection than Red Giant, but with similar leaf shape. Fast growing , with good yields.

Position:

Mustard grows best in a sunny position in a fertile soil. It can be sown directly into open ground or can be planted into grow bags. If grown for babyleaf it can be sown into small containers or even windowboxes. Choose a well-drained container that's at least 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) deep. Containers may need to be watered a couple times a day when temperatures begin to warm. If growing micro-greens, seeds can be planted in shallow flats and harvested about 10 to 21 days after planting. If given adequate light, they can also be grown indoors during the winter.

Sowing: Sow under cover February to May or sow direct April to October
Mustard seeds can be sown practically year round. Plant little and often, every two weeks for continuous supply. Seeds germinate in 5 to 10 days at temperatures between 7 to 30°C (45 to 85°F)
Sow sparingly in shallow drills 6 to 12mm (¼ to ½ in) deep. Space seeds 2.5cm (1in) apart for cut-and-come-again salad or 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) for whole plant production. Adequate spacing is most important when growing plants to full size. This is easy to accomplish by simply thinning plants as they begin to get crowded in the garden.

Cultivation:
Mustard greens are primarily a cool season vegetable and are at their peak in late spring to early summer. Keep well watered especially in summer. Hot weather causes the plants to bolt and their greens to turn unpleasantly bitter.
An autumn crop is often planted because mustard is frost-resistant and easily overwinters in temperate areas. Protect late sowings with cloches and the plants will keep growing throughout the winter and continue to grow vigorously when temperatures warm and daylight increases.

Harvesting: 20 days for babyleaf, 45 days to maturity
Mustard plants can be harvested for baby leaf once the leaves are 5cm (2in) tall. For milder leaves, pick young, they are best cropped at around 15cm (6in) for salads.
