Traditional torpedo shaped Long Red Florence onion from Italy have a mild sweet flavour, and can either be pulled young as spring onions or allowed to mature for August cropping.


The elongated bulbs have a red skin and are ideal for casseroles or salads.

Did you know: That Onion Red Florence is classed as a "Banana Shallot". This term is often used by cooks to describe the long bulb varieties of onions and shallots. It is more of a cooking term than one used by gardeners.

Good size bulbs with deep purple-red colour.

WHEN TO SOW
February to April

 

WHERE TO SOW
Sow thinly in shallow 1cm (½") deep rows 30cm (12") apart. Can be sown 2 or 3 seeds into plug cells.

WHAT TO DO NEXT
As soon as seedlings are large enough to handle, start thinning out until about 10cm (4") apart. Plant out plug-grown plants when seedlings are about 10cm (4") tall.

 

MATURITY
Late July onwards

 

HANDY TIPS

Onion seed does not like being sown into wet soil. It may help to sprinkle some dry compost into the row before sowing.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
