Sugar Baby Watermelon is an icebox type of watermelon widely adapted, produces an abundance of small 8 x 8-1/2 inch fruits. Sugar Baby Watermelon rind is tough, thin, and dark green. It has a very sweet, firm, bright red flesh with small dark brown seeds. Delicious!

The first of its genre and still the standard compact watermelon. Saves space in the garden and in the refrigerator. Among the earliest in its class, Sugar Baby grows 4?5 kg. fruits, dark green outside and deep red inside. Thin, hard, tough rind with distinct stripes when immature, becoming almost black when ripe. The only thing over sized is the incredibly sweet flavour. Compact vines produce plenty of fruits packed with sweet red flesh. Agricultural Research Service scientists have discovered that watermelon, known to contain large amounts of the antioxidant lycopene, is also an excellent source of the amino acid citrulline that is important for wound healing, cell division and removing toxins from the body.

SOWING:

Sow watermelon seed in late spring when soil is warm or start 4-6 weeks earlier indoors. Plant 5 watermelon seeds in a ring about 2 inches across. Cover watermelon seed with 1/2 inch of fine soil. Each ring is called a hill and hills should be spaced 3 feet apart.

FOR TRANSPLANTS:

Grow the seedlings under dry, warm conditions until they develop at least 1 true leaf. Pot on transfer to cold frame if you have one. Fertilize seedlings with a fertilizer transplant into the garden just before the plants become root bound and when the soil temperature is at least 60°F. Space transplants 3-4 feet apart in rows 5-6 feet apart. Apply 1/2 cup of our complete fertilizer dug in well around each plant.

HARVEST:

Cantaloupe will easily slip from the vine when ripe. With other melons, check the leaf where the fruit is attached to the vine. The fruit is mature when this leaf begins to yellow. Watermelons are ready for harvest when the tendril closest to the fruit is dry and brown or when the bottom side of the fruit is yellow. Melons and watermelons will not ripen off the vine.
