Organic Red Chard - HEIRLOOM Rich crimson red stems and bright green savvied leaves make this the standard for red chards. Especially nice for a micro-green or baby leaf because stem and leaf veins colour early. Our improved strain has been selected for highly savvied leaves, colour contrast, and a minimal amount of chocolate leaves later in the season. (Beta vulgaris)

In spite of the name, Swiss chard originates in the Mediterranean region, where professional and home chefs alike use it for salad greens or as a flavouring in soup or rice. The first written mention of this vegetable in the United States is in The American Farmer magazine, where Baltimore farmer Gideon Smith reported his experimental planting. It remained a curiosity until after the Civil War, when gradually it gained in popularity.

Days to maturity: 30 days baby leaf, 60 full size. Holds up well in a baby leaf mix, and is an excellent addition to salads! Harvest in 26-28 days.

SOWING:

Direct sow outside in early spring. Can be fall planted. Plant about 4?-6? apart and 1/2? below soil surface. Rows should be spaced at 18?-24? apart.

Harvest leaves as required, picking only a few from each plant.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
