White icicle is a variety of radish which is a member of the Raphanus family. Its botanical name isRaphanus sativus 'White icicle'. White icicle is a heirloom (open pollinated) variety. Its fruits normally ripen as a colour very similar to White.
Icy white, crisp, juicy radishes grow white tapered roots about 3-5 inches (7-12 cm) long that have mildly pungent white flesh. Where the radish protrudes above the ground the shoulders should be green, although there is a variant with purple shoulders.
This vegetable is related to the turnip and horseradish family. Can be served as an hors d?oeuvre, as a garnish for salads or sandwiches, or simply as a snack. Keeps in the refrigerator, without the leaves, for four to seven days.
A fast-maturing, long season crop. A popular salad item which is high yielding, in limited space. An excellent catch crop throughout the season.
Germinates between 14 and 30°C.
For early glasshouse production sow January-March. Sow main crop March-August. Sow late glasshouse crop September-October.
Spacing 1.5-2.5cm x 20-45cm.
