Heirloom butterhead, green leaf tinged red.

Lettuce Marvel of 4 Seasons is a very handsome heirloom variety. This is a butterhead type with 12 inch heads and wine red, savoyed leaves which darken as time passes. The undersides of the leaves, and the stems, are pink.

Marvel of Four Seasons is slow to bolt and tolerant of high and low temperatures so is a perfect variety to sow from January to April or September to November. Autumn sowings to over winter will need extra protection during the winter months

Start from seed 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in wide rows and thin to 14 inches apart for best-formed heads. Thinned seedlings can be replanted.

Keep soil moist but not soggy. Protect from rabbits and slugs. Extend the harvest season by planting successive crops. Summer heat causes lettuce to bolt.

Pick outer leaves as they grow or harvest all at once. Harvesting when weather or day temperature is cooler will result in crisper leaves. Do not harvest lettuces until you are ready to use it.

Sow: Indoors, January to March.
Outdoors: March to April or September to November.
How to Sow:
Sow thinly outside 1cm deep in rows 25cm apart in a well-prepared bed and lightly cover with fine soil & water carefully. Seedlings should germinate in 7-14 days. When large enough to handle thin seedlings to one every 15cm and then again a 2-3 weeks later to one every 30cm. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply. Early sowings will benefit from sowing & potting on inside and transplanting outside later when soil has warmed up (April onwards). Late sowings will need added protection during winter months e.g. cloche etc.

Care:
In spring/summer keep soil moist especially during dry weather, weed free and protect early/late sowings with a cloche. Best to water in the morning as watering in the evening will increase the risk of disease.

Harvest: February to April & June to November.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season.

Regular feeding is recommended.
