Green broccoli has proved to be a very effective health food due to the high levels of antioxidants concentrated in the plant at the seedling stage. The SBROC 4503 is an improved selection with excellent uniformity and a big vigorous cotyledon this variety provides a succession of delicious tender shoots.
Sowing: sow thinly, March-May, in pots or in seed bed, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil, which has already been watered. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Water well until plants are established.
Transplant 60cm (2') apart, both ways, when plants are about 10cm (4") tall. Plant firmly and water well. Or sow indoors, March-May, 0.5cm (¼") deep, in a tray of compost.
Water well and place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Keep moist. Transplant 5cm (2") apart to other trays, when large enough to handle.
Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts) before planting out, July-August, into well-cultivated, fertile soil.
Protect from Cabbage White Butterfly with netting.
Incorporate plenty of organic matter to feed the plant and help retain water. Keep well watered. Can also be grown in greenhouse soil provided it is very fertile and they are well watered or even in gro-bags or containers.
Regular feeding is recommended.
