Plug Plant Count: 12

We are offering twelve (12) Cabbage Stonehead F1 Plug Plants ready for potting on and growing on in frost free greenhouse or on sunny windowsill ready for planting out as soon as last frosts have passed

Stonehead F1 cabbage forms small, round globes that average between 4 and 6 pounds (1.8 to 2.7 kg.). The flavourful heads are perfect raw ingredients for coleslaw and in salad and is equally delicious in cooked recipes. The heads mature early (67 days) and resist cracking and splitting. This can extend the harvesting season, as not all Stonehead cabbage plants need to be harvested at the same time.

Stonehead F1 cabbage plants are resistant to yellowing leaves, black rot and pest infestations. They grow to a maximum height of about 20 inches (51 cm.) and can withstand a mild frost.

Seedlings are ready for transplanting when they have 5 or 6 leaves. Make a hole big enough to accommodate the root ball firming the soil around the plant.

The spacing between plants depends on the end product, for compact heads space at 30cm, 45cm for large heads and only 15cm for spring cabbage to encourage the pointed conical shape.

All young seedlings and transplants should be protected from cabbage root fly. The most successful way to do this is with protective discs around the base of the stem, often called ‘collars’.

Keep young plants well watered until established and then only water during dry periods. Keep weeds under control in the beds. Earth up spring and winter cabbages in winter and firm down any which have been loosened by wind and frost.

Cultivation:
Once the plants are in the ground the process is easy. Just let them stand and protect them from the eggs of Cabbage White butterfly. Remove any yellowing or fallen leaves to prevent fungal diseases setting in. Being a shorter-term crop, it is less likely to be troubled by aphids or caterpillars

  • Spacing, Row: 22-24 inches
  • Spacing, Plant: 24 inches
  • Light: Sunny Location
  • Or plant directly outdoors in mid spring or early summer when last frost has passed.
  • Plant cabbage in a sunny location where no cabbage was grown the year before. Keep weed free, moist and protect against pests.

Harvest: November to March.
Once they feel solid and are firm to the touch, cabbage can be harvested by cutting the stalk at the base of the plant. Unlike other varieties of cabbage which must be harvested upon maturity to prevent split heads, Stonehead can stay in the ground longer. Don't get carried away and strip plants entirely in one go.

When plug plants arrive transplant into individual 7.5cm (3") pots of compost and grow on at a minimum temperature of 15C (59F).

When plants are well grown, transplant into baskets and containers. If the plant is suited for growing outdoors when all risk of frost has passed gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before positioning baskets outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun once all frost risk has passed.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.
Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
