We are offering twelve Lettuce All Year Round plug plants ready for potting on and growing on in frost free greenhouse or on sunny windowsill ready for planting out as soon as last frosts have passed

A mainstay amongst salad crops. For protected all year round cropping and open ground production. Curly and coloured lettuce are popular with consumers and retailers alike. Well suited to sales in packs and as young plants. The wide range of colours and textures available makes lettuce ideal for mixed sald packs and 'baby leaf' products.

Compact hearts, long cropping period, slow to bolt, lacks the uniformity of more modern varieties. Sow March-August.

Seedlings are ready for transplanting when they have 5 or 6 leaves. Make a hole big enough to accommodate the root ball firming the soil around the plant.

Keep young plants well watered until established and then only water during dry periods.

Keep weeds under control in the beds.

Cultivation:
Once the plants are in the ground the process is easy. Just let them stand and protect aphids or caterpillars.

Remove any yellowing or fallen leaves to prevent fungal diseases setting in.

Harvesting:

Harvest lettuce once the leaves have reached 3-6” long. Be sure to pick the leaves once they’re grown large enough, but before they reach maturity. Harvesting mature lettuce will result in bitter-tasting plants. Pick the outer leaves of the lettuce plant so the smaller leaves in the centre will continue to establish. Other varieties of lettuce such as butterheads or romaine, can also be harvested by digging up the entire plant or cutting them while leaving an inch of the stem behind. You can store harvested lettuce in a plastic bag in the fridge for 7-10 days.

When plug plants arrive transplant into individual 7.5cm (3") pots of compost and grow on at a minimum temperature of 15C (59F).

When plants are well grown, transplant into baskets and containers. If the plant is suited for growing outdoors when all risk of frost has passed gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before positioning baskets outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun once all frost risk has passed.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.
Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
