Canterbury Bells calycanthema (Cup & Saucer) a mix of two shades of blue, plus rose and white. Popular ‘cottage garden’ biennial with large, bell-shaped flowers 7cm long.

Surrounded at their base by a calyx of the same colour. A must for any herbaceous border.

Sow October or March. Ht over 1 mtr.

 

Biennial, sow May-June, the fine seeds thinly in trays cover seed very lightly with vermiculite, germinates 2-3 weeks at 15-20°C. Place in a cold frame or unheated glasshouse.

 

As soon as the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick off into trays 10cm (4") apart.

Plant out in the flowering site during September or October, 30cm (12") apart.

HANDY TIP

The leaves of Canterbury Bells seem particularly attractive to slugs during Winter, so added protection is a good precaution. Dead head regularly to provide a Summer-long display.

  

Suitable for the garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
