Lobelia Riviera Blue Splash is a bedding variety. An early flowering series, approximately 15 days earlier than standard varieties, with a vigorous but compact habit. 10cm. An early free flowering rose with a distinct white eye. Multi-pellets: contain approximately 6-8 seeds per pellet; sow one pellet per cell.

Best grown as a HHA - Half hardy annual. Compact plants covered with tiny flowers throughout the summer, usually grown as edging for beds and borders, often with alyssum.

  • Lobelia (Lobelia erinus compacta)

  • Half-Hardy Annual

  • Sowing Months: January, Febuary, March, April

  • Flowering Period: July onwards

Culture: Sow January-April under glass in gentle heat. Flowers July-September.

  • Sow lobelia from late winter to mid spring on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-24C (65-75F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-21 days.

  • When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When lobelia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun or semi-shade on moist, fertile, well drained soil at a distance of 10cm (4") apart.

Feed and water lobelia plants frequently throughout the summer to promote an endless supply of delicate lobelia flowers.

Suitable for the garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Excellent long-lasting cut flower. Hardy annual type, for direct sowing March to May? to flower in June-August. Upright stems carry lovely fragrant flowers that change from sky blue to golden yellow.

Soak the seeds in tepid water for 24hrs prior to sowing aids faster germination.

Dig your bed over fairly deeply…about a spade blade and a half if you can let the tap root have an easy life it needs to go as deep as it can to bring up the juicy nitrogen that other annuals haven’t been able to reach.

sowings directly into the soil after the frosts have tiptoed up north…this is around the 15th of May for England…earlier here in Cornwall and later in Scotland.

Keep your seed bed moist whilst the seeds are wriggling themselves awake and into germination mode.
