Lavatera Beauty Mixed - A really useful annual plant for borders and cut flowers. An improved series carrying four perfectly matching colours a mixture of white, pink, salmon and rose in plant habit and flowering time.

This is a modern variety of an old cottage garden plant, very hardy and fast-growing, Lavatera trimestris is an annual cousin of the perennial mallow, with larger flowers.
Dwarf, bushy and well branched the plants are weather resistant and, growing to only 65cm (25in) the plants do not staking. They are smothered in flowers from mid-summer to autumn. The flowers are large 10cm (4in) across and are excellent for cutting.

An economical way to quickly and effectively fill a large border with a dazzling display of glistening colour. Tall, wide, sturdy plants bear large, showy blooms in shades of rose, pink and white throughout the summer. The large bushy plants produce giant trumpet-like flowers.

  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.
  • HA - Hardy annual.
  • Height 75-91cm (2½-3').

Sowing:

Sow from late autumn to late spring.

  • The seed of Lavatera is quite large and can be direct sown where the plants are intended to flower.
  • Seeds can be direct sown or sown under glass from March onwards.
  • The optimum growing temperature is 21°C (70°F).
  • Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days.

Sowing Indoors:

Sow from late autumn to early spring

  • Seeds can also be sown indoors from September to March (6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date). Because Lavatera grow quickly, it is better to plant seeds into a large pot, (15 to 20cm / 6 to 8in) rather than planting into small cells, which will eliminate the need for pricking out later.
  • Sow three seeds to each pot, plant 2mm (1/16in) deep in John Innes seed compost. Barely cover the seeds with compost or vermiculite. Make sure that the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination.
  • Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Place in the greenhouse, preferably unheated, or coldframe. Remove the polythene bag once seedlings appear. The seeds will soon germinate and by mid-May they should be ready to plant out in the garden border. Plant out up to 75cm (30in) apart.

Sowing Direct:

Sow from March onwards.

  • Sow thinly, 6mm (¼in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart in well cultivated soil, raked to a fine tilth. Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
  •
  • When large enough to handle, thin out until they are 30cm (12in) apart in spring
  •  All seed is coated to guard against disease during emergence and to give better disease resistance throughout the culture

Suitable for the garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Mesembryanthemum Magic Carpet Mixed Flower Seeds

Product no.: FLOW026

In stock
Delivery period: 1 working days

Old price £1.43
from £1.17
Price plus VAT, plus delivery

  •  Plant Classification: Half-hardy Annual
  • Height (approx.): 10cm (4”)

A traditional bedding subject, producing masses of bright coloured daisy-like flowers over fleshy foliage, early in the summer bedding season, and with a relatively short flowering life. It can tolerate cool temperatures; Mesembryanthemum ‘Magic Carpet Mixed’ simply loves poor, dry soils where most other plants would fail. These drought tolerant Livingstone Daisies are perfect for planting on sunny banks and borders where they will quickly knit together to form a rich carpet of colour. You can even try them in a low maintenance hanging basket where they'll only need watering now and then. Height: 10cm (4”). Spread: 30cm (12”).

Propagation and Growing-on: Sow the small seeds February-April onto the surface of a free-draining, seed sowing compost, which should be thoroughly wetted and the trays allowed to drain prior to sowing (to prevent damping-off diseases). Sow either into trays, or multi-sow into plug trays, (to avoid root disturbance when pricking out). Cover trays with clear or milky polythene to maintain humidity, until the first seedlings are visible. Germination takes around 7-10 days at 15-20oC (not warmer – higher temperatures depress germination). Keep the germinating seedlings moist at all times, and grow on at 15-20 oC. Around 12-14 weeks sowing to flowering.

When they are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before transplanting into their final positions. Mesembryanthemums thrive in poor sandy, sharply drained soil, in a sunny, sheltered position. Add plenty of sharp grit to the soil prior to planting in order to improve drainage and prevent the roots from rotting.

Suitable for the Garden, vegetable garden, allotments, borders and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.
