Endive Ruffec. Heirloom. Large head, very fine frilly leaves, large white stems.  75 or so days. Direct seed or use transplants Great cooked or in salads. Best for fall. Set out 5-6 week transplants 60 days before desire harvest or direct seed 80 or so days before desired harvest. 2-3 seeds/16 inches. If you grow them closer together (say 8 inches), they tend to grow upright and self blanch. Blanch heart by tying up leaves 10-12 days before harvest. Great cooked or in salads.

Green Curled Ruffec Endive Germination: Endive makes an excellent fall crop, since light frost sweetens the taste, and excess heat causes bitterness in the leaves or bolting. For an early summer crop, sow seeds indoors 2 months before the last spring frost; sow them 1/4" deep. When the seedlings emerge, thin them to 6" apart. Four weeks after planting them, set them outside 12" apart. For a fall crop, direct sow seeds in July. Water the ground, scatter the seeds on the surface, then cover with 1/3" of soil. When the seedlings emerge, thin them to 12" in all directions. Areas with warmer winters may be able to plant a winter crop about two months before the last frost.

Growing Green Curled Ruffec Endive Seeds: Keep the soil moist to prevent toughness or a bitter taste, but avoid getting the leaves wet as this may cause rotting. Mulch helps conserve moisture and control weeds. If desired, blanch the leaves about 2-3 weeks before harvesting by tying together the outer leaves to shade the inner part of the plant. Make sure that the leaves of the plant are completely dry before tying them, or rotting may result.

Harvesting Green Curled Ruffec Endive: Cut individual leaves for baby greens as soon as they reach a good size for eating. Cut mature heads off at the base. For additional growth, leave an inch of stem.

Tasty Mustard Mix Contains: Pizzo, Red Lace, Red Zest, Red Lion, Green Frills

They can be grown in open ground or under protection, direct sown into beds and  then harvested at 12-15cm tall in as little as 28 days from sowing at peak  season. Viridis Hortus Salad mixes can also be sown direct in to pots (use 1-3  litre pots) Just sow little and often to get continuity.

Each of the mixes can be grown all year round, for a continuous supply of tasty  and nutritious baby leaves. They can be grown in the home, on windowsills or  raised in pots in glasshouses or polytunnel's in cooler areas for winter early  spring crops.

Sowing:
In autumn and winter seed can be sown into pots or seed trays which can be grown  on the kitchen windowsill or in a heated conservatory/greenhouse.
Sow 20-30 seeds into a 10-12cm pot using a free draining compost and cover seed  lightly after sowing.
For spring and summer crops, sow direct into prepared seed beds in the kitchen  garden or greenhouse border, and this is the best growing technique for spring  and summer crops.

Sow outdoors sprinkle seeds 1/2 inch apart in a 2 to 4 inch wide row covering  lightly or broadcast sow.

A tender lettuce favorite, freckles provides gardeners with succulent leaves of lettuce that can be picked as needed.

Lettuce, Freckles

Recommended Planting Requirements: Light soils with good drainage will give you the best harvest of lettuce.

Growing Recommendation: Watering regularly is critical to good growth. In warmer climates watering more often may be needed.

Harvesting & Storage: Like most lettuces, you can trimmed wanted leaves from the plant as needed. You can also cut entire tops of the lettuce off and it will regrown. This is known as a cut and come again crop.

CULTURE: Most lettuces are hardy, cool-season crops that can be planted as early as the soil can be worked. Many do best when the air temperature is between 60-70°F, and will germinate well at soil temperatures as low as 40°F. Choose heat tolerant varieties for summer plantings. Lettuce can be sown either directly into the garden or started indoors and transplanted. With succession plantings every 3 weeks, you can enjoy fresh salads all season. A cold frame and cold-hardy varieties can stretch the spring and fall growing season into the winter months.

TO DIRECT SOW: Sow seed 1 inch apart, in rows 16-18 inches apart. Cover seeds lightly and firm gently. As soon as 2-3 true leaves have formed, thin loose-leaf types 10-14 inches apart and icebergs, butterheads, and remains 12-16 inches apart.

FOR TRANSPLANTS: Sow 3-4 seeds per inch in sterile seedling mix 3 weeks prior to planting out. Transplant individual plants into pots or cell trays 2 weeks after sowing. Before planting outside, harden off for 2-3 days by reducing water and placing outdoors in a sheltered location. Leafy green vegetables require a moderately fertile soil. One cup of our complete fertilizer per 10 row feet will provide adequate nutrition.

INSECTS/PESTS: Most lettuce grows quickly, so pests aren't a problem. Aphids can be washed off with a strong spray of water, and slugs can be controlled with diatomaceous earth, slug baits, or traps.

HARVEST: During the warmer seasons, lettuce remains in prime eating condition for about 3 weeks. While picking individual leaves helps extend the season somewhat, all eventually become tough and bitter as they begin to bolt. We've found that rinsing lettuce under warm tap water can help reduce bitterness.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Compact butterhead for indoor autumn and winter production. Medium thick leaves, a good all round variety, very strong against tipburn. Grows well in a cold greenhouse. Ideal replacement for Wiske, although frame size is slightly smaller.

Buttercrunch is a Bibb type whose prized shape and buttery, is small, slightly upright dense heads of superb crisp and crunchy texture has become a favorite for salads.

Its rich green leaves, sometimes tinged with red, form a beautiful rosette in the garden that holds well under stress and has good bolt resistance. A good source of vitamin A and phytonutrients. Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and even appreciates it in spring in hot climates. For the largest-sized rosettes, space transplants 18 inches apart.

Stands well without bolting.

Head Size: 6 to 12 inches (semi-heading)

Matures: 55 days

Sowing:
- Indoor winter varieties:   Oct- April
- Indoor summer: varieties April-Oct
- Outdoor summer:  Jan- July

Early outdoor sowings can be raised underglass in modules and  transplanted.

Direct-seeding

Sow seed 1/8 inch deep, 1 inch apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. When plants have two or three true leaves, thin to 12-inch spacings for crisphead varieties, 6 to 10 inches for other types. You can also lightly broadcast seed (particularly of looseleaf varieties) in a patch instead of a row.

Transplants

Sow in 1-inch cells 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting outside. Harden seedlings by reducing water and temperature for 3 days before transplanting. Hardened plants should survive 20 F. Space crisphead transplants 12 inches apart in rows 18 inches apart. Space other varieties 6 to 10 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart.

MAINTAINING

Use row covers to protect very early plantings from cold, to protect young plants from insects, and (supported by hoops) to shade crops when warm weather arrives.

Make succession plantings every week or two, and grow several varieties with different maturity dates for a continuous supply. Moisture, stress, and high temperatures, particularly at night, encourage bolting. As the season progresses, plant more bolt-resistant varieties. Locate plants where they will be partially shaded by taller nearby plants, latticework or other screen.

Harvest:  55 to 60 days
