In stock
Delivery period: 1 working days

£0.98
Price plus VAT, plus delivery

Packet Content (approx.): 550 (1g)

Our salad leaf mixes are selected from varieties with comparable growth rates interesting and tasty baby leaf salads

The Frilly Leaf Salad Mix contains:

  • Salad Rocket Dentellata
  • Greek Cress
  • Kale Red Russian
  • Mustard, Red Frills
  • Mustard, Green Frills

This is an exciting mix of vibrant colours and incomparable textures of salad in its youth. It is made up of classic leaves and will enhance presentation and flavours of any dish.

The Frilly Leaf Salad Mix is one of a series of blends which provide a wide variety of colourful and tasty salads.

They can be grown in open ground or under protection, direct sown into beds and then harvested at 12-15cm tall in as little as 28 days from sowing at peak season. Viridis Hortus Salad mixes can also be sown direct in to pots (use 1-3 litre pots) Just sow little and often to get continuity.

Each of the mixes can be grown all year round, for a continuous supply of tasty and nutritious baby leaves. They can be grown in the home, on windowsills or raised in pots in glasshouses or polytunnel?s in cooler areas for winter early spring crops.

Sowing: In autumn and winter seed can be sown into pots or seed trays which can be grown on the kitchen windowsill or in a heated conservatory/greenhouse. Sow 20-30 seeds into a 10-12cm pot using a free draining compost and cover seed lightly after sowing.

For spring and summer crops, sow direct into prepared seed beds in the kitchen garden or greenhouse border, and this is the best growing technique for spring and summer crops. Sow outdoors sprinkle seeds 1/2 inch apart in a 2 to 4 inch wide row covering lightly or broadcast sow.

Tip a small amount of seed into your hand, take a pinch and spread thinly along the trench. Cover with soil, label and water. If birds are a problem in your garden, spread netting to prevent them eating the seed.

Sow every two weeks for a continual supply of tender young leaf.

Cultivation: The best tasting leaves come from plants which are grown quickly; this means a temperature of 15-19°C (60-70°F). Under optimum growing conditions a crop of salad leaves can be ready for picking 3-4 weeks from sowing. Slower growing crops can become more fibrous and hotter flavoured.

Once cut the plants should have sufficient energy for re-growth to provide a second or even third crop of leaves, giving a regular supply with "little and often" sowing's. (Also available are Bright and Spicy Salad Mix, Californian Salad Mix, Frilly Leaf Salad Mix, Mesclun Mixture, Provence Salad Mix, Oriental Salad Mix)

Suitable for the Garden, Greenhouse, Allotments and Containers.  Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season.

Regular feeding is recommended.

Lettuce Little Gem Vegetable Seeds

Product no.: SEEDV034

In stock
Delivery period: 1 working days

from £1.03
Price plus VAT, plus delivery

Cos Lettuce 'Little Gem' is one of the earliest varieties to mature, producing small compact plants which are packed with a crisp, sweet heart. This RHS Award of Garden Merit cultivar grows well under cloches and also has excellent root aphid resistance making it a gardener's favourite. Height and spread: 20cm (8?).

Direct sow lettuce seeds outdoors from March to August into well prepared, fertile, moist soil in sun or semi shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½") in drills 30cm (12") apart in soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 30cm (12") apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Make regular sowings for a constant supply.

Water lettuce frequently and hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Dry weather may cause heads of lettuce plants to bolt so watering is particularly critical during the 2 weeks before harvesting. A thick mulch applied around the plants will help to retain moisture in the soil. Harvest lettuce when required by pulling up the entire plant before trimming off the stem with a knife.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season.

Regular feeding is recommended.
