Wintergreen Offenham 3 cabbage has proven itself as an excellent variety for both spring greens, from February onwards and for early season cabbages. It “hearts up” in April.

Large well-filled dark green heads produce conical leaves on strong plants; the leaves are well flavoured and sweet. The plants are uniform with a heavy crop at first cut and are not prone to bolting.
It is a very popular variety and an ideal tasty vegetable when little else is available.

Cabbage can be produced throughout the year, providing growers with a continuous supply. Extremely hardy, these faster-maturing spring greens are ideal for utilising redundant polytunnel or glasshouse space over the winter months.

Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM).

All brassica crops grow best in partial-shade, in firm, fertile, free-draining soil. Start digging over your soil as soon as you can brave the elements. Remove any stones you find and work in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Tread on the soil to remove air pockets and to make the surface firm. Brassicas will fail if the soil is too acidic; add lime to the soil if necessary, aiming for a pH of 6.5-7.5.

Sowing: Sow successionally from February to July
Nearly all brassicas should be planted in a seedbed or in modules under glass and then transferred. Seeds should be sown thinly, as this reduces the amount of future thinning necessary and potential risk from pests.

Sow seeds 12mm (½in) deep and space 15 to 20cm (6-8in) between rows. Once the seeds have germinated, thin the seedlings to 7.5cm (3in) between each plant. After germination, seedlings will often be ‘leggy’, so plant them as deep as possible to really anchor them into the soil.
Cabbage seedlings are ready for transplanting when they are between 6 and 8cm high (2½ to 3in). Water the day before moving, and keep well-watered until established. Plant firmly, close together for small heads and wider apart for larger cabbages, around 30-45cm (12 to 18in) apart.

Growing:
Clear away any yellow leaves. Feed the plants as they near maturity with a foliar feed.

Harvest:
June to August (through to October)
Earliest heads can be cut, leaving the stump in the ground to produce a second crop of small leafy heads.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.
Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Packet Content (approx.): 300 (1g)

Cabbage Red Drumhead is easy to grow dark burgundy red cabbage that is good looking, tasty and packed full of vitamins. It produces crisp, firm & crunchy hearts that are great raw, cooked or pickled with vinegar. A compact variety so useful for those with a small plot.

Spring sowings of Cabbage Red Drumhead are ready to harvest late August and July sowings are ready late October. The late autumn crops are great for storing during winter.

Red Cabbage is good for you as it contains compounds that are thought to protect against Alzeheimer’s by reducing the build-up of certain plaques in the brain that may cause Alzeheimer’s. (The nutrient levels are reduced when the cabbage is cooked but they are still high compared to other veg).

If you have any Red Cabbage Red Drumhead seeds left sow as a micro-green – they are ready to harvest quickly & the little red shoots pack a punch and look lovely on a dinner plate.

Sow Feburay to early summer germinates between 10 and 25°C.
Seedlings are ready for transplanting when they have 5 or 6 leaves. Make a hole big enough to accommodate the root ball firming the soil around the plant.

The spacing between plants depends on the end product, for compact heads space at 30cm, 45cm for large heads and only 15cm for spring cabbage to encourage the pointed conical shape. All young seedlings and transplants should be protected from cabbage root fly. The most successful way to do this is with protective discs around the base of the stem, often called ‘collars’.
Keep young plants well watered until established and then only water during dry periods. Keep weeds under control in the beds. Earth up spring and winter cabbages in winter and firm down any which have been loosened by wind and frost.

Harvesting
Harvest spring cabbages from March through to May when the heart is solid throughout. Summer cabbages can be harvested from late June through to October Winter cabbages harvest from September to March for Savoy types, or November to March for winter cabbages. Red cabbages have a much shorter harvest period of September to the end of November but can be stored through winter by packing in straw. The hardy winter types can be left in the ground for several months and cut as required. Harvest cabbages by cutting close to ground level with a kitchen knife, if you cut a cross on the stump a secondary crop of small cabbages can appear from the cut surface

An easy to grow and low maintenance plant that will give confidence to the first time gardener as it produces bucket loads of veg. Plant out in April - late May when the chance of frost has passed. Incorporate plenty of organic matter to feed the plant and help retain water.

As they are hungry feeders, feed them every 14 days with a potash rich fertilizer. Keep well watered but do not wet the fruit.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.

Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season

Product no.: SEEDV253

In stock
Delivery period: 1 working days

£1.07

Packet Content (approx): 70 (0.19g)

Versatile, rather compact variety with good internal quality for maincrop and late season production. Lovely straight shape enables easy packing.

Chinese Cabbage CCAB 1623 F1 is a maincrop and late season Variety, Probably the most widely recognized oriental vegetable. Useful for salad or culinary purposes, and relatively easy to produce

A vigorous but compact torpedo shaped Chinese cabbage, It starts producing neat heads around 23 cm high with average weight 900g, about 30 days after sowing. Bright green outer leaves and well blanched heart. Well adapted to a wide range of growing conditions. Tolerant to bolting and cold temperatures.
Introduction

This oriental brassica is both fast growing and highly productive if given the right conditions. It requires an open situation with fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil (pH 6.5 or 5.8 on peaty soils). Being fast-growing the soil must be rich in organic matter and high in nitrogen.

It is susceptible to excessive salt concentrations, and never does well in poor, dry soil. Being generally shallow-rooted, water is important so water little and often.
Chinese Cabbage is very temperature-sensitive, especially in relation to bolting, but improved F1 cultivars and crop management should minimise this risk.

Temperature
during propagation should be 18oC min., then when planting out in modules at the 2-3
leaf stage, a min. of 7oC is required. The crop can be stored in a cold store at 1oC and 90-95%25 R.H. for 2-3 weeks.

Cultural Instructions
Sow from June minimum germination temperature is 18oC, with an optimum of 20-25oC. Sow into blocks or modules - do not transplant bare-root seedlings. Germination should take about 7-12 days. Plant up the young plants at approx 30cm within and 30-40cm between rows.

Maturity 60-65 days from transplanting.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.
Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Introducing the new vegetable with...

Flower Sprout is a brand new vegetable, the plant is similar to that of a Brussels sprout but forms open rosettes up the stem to a frilly leaved top. The rosettes are the Flower Sprouts® and look like tiny cabbages with flashes of purple, edged with green frilly leaves. A cross between two real superfoods, Brussels Sprout and British Kale. Winter hardy. An early variety.

Fantastic complex taste of a sprout with a mild, sweet nutty taste of kale.

Just 100g of Flower Sprouts® contain double the amount of vitamin B6 the vitamin that helps us use and store energy from the food we eat and twice the amount of vitamin C than standard Brussels sprouts.

"A generous double dose of vitamin E will fight toxins and provide a powerful antioxidant meaning they are good for the immune system".

Because of its great flavour Flower Sprouts® has proven to be a hit with both adults and children, it is also really easy to cook. After a quick rinse Flower Sprouts® can be steamed, microwaved, stir fried, boiled or blanched.

Sow February (under glass) ? April, Sow seeds 1/4 inches deep, about 4-6 inches inch apart, in rows 18-36 inches apart. Cover the seed with fine vermiculite or sifted compost for best germination. Keep moist to prevent soil crusting. Optimum soil temperature range for germination: 10 and 25°C. Days to germination: 5-17.

Transplant 5-6 Weeks from sowing

After plants produce their third true leaf, thin to about 12-24 inches apart, maintaining the strongest plants. These early thinning are wonderful for fresh salad greens. Now apply 1/4 to 1/2 cup of our complete fertilizer, or equivalent, into the soil around each young plant to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production.

Harvesting: providing a crop between September to early December.

Suitable for the vegetable garden, allotments and containers.
Be prepared to water well and supplement feed with high-potash feed during season. Regular feeding is recommended.

Pak Choi Colour Crunch Mix Vegetable Seeds

Product no.: SEEDV339

In stock
Delivery period: 1 working days

from £0.95
Price plus VAT, plus delivery

If you can't decide which pak choi variety to choose, here is a lovely mix which will give you a rainbow of colours. It includes Baraku, Canton White, Rubi and the bright leaved Gold Yellow F1, together with Tatsoi. Brilliant in pots for baby leaves with a great mixture of mild flavours.

Dense planting and high yield can be obtained. Seedlings picked in the thinning plants during growth are good for cooking too. This easy to grow vegetable, suitable for spring to late autumn crops, is a very good variety for home garden and fresh market growing. It is tender and delicious, good for stir-fry and soup.

Position:

Pak Choi grows best in a sunny position in a fertile soil. It can be sown directly into open ground or can be planted into grow bags. If grown for baby leaf it can be sown into small containers or even window boxes.

Sowing: Can be grown all year

Pak choi is a cool-season crop typically grown in autumn and early winter, though in warmer climates harvest can continue well into winter. It will germinate at temperatures between 13 to 24°C (55 to 70°F).
These green stemmed varieties withstand adverse conditions than white stemmed forms. Some protection is required for winter harvesting. Phasing the sowing will extend the cropping period.

Sow thinly, direct into finely raked, moist, weed free soil 6mm (0.25in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart. Thin the resulting seedlings, leaving the strongest, by degrees to a final spacing of 20cm (8in) apart.

Tending:

It is important to water well in dry weather and to keep well weeded. Provide a weak liquid feed once a week.
It needs to be grown quickly and the roots must be kept moist. Checks to growth, brought on by overcrowding or drought, will cause plants to bolt. They are snail magnets, so plants need protection in the open garden.

Harvesting:

Plants reach a stage for baby leaf! harvest in 28 days and mature plants take around 50 days. Chop off enough of the base of the Pak choi plant before washing so that stalks can be cleaned individually.
