The Cayenne Long Slim Chilli pepper typically long, red, slender fruits are often called chilies? and when dried, ground for Cayenne pepper. Although best grown in the greenhouse, do try some in a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden.

The pointed, bright green pods, 4-5 ins. long and produced in profusion, turn fiery red as they mature. They are used fresh in hot sauces or dried and ground for cayenne pepper. They are also reported as being one of the best Peppers for seasoning pickles and salsa.

50-60,000 Scoville units

Chilli Pepper seeds require no prior treatment although steeping them in lukewarm water for 12 hours will encourage germination.

Sow pepper seeds about 1 cm deep into a seed tray or in small pots or cells. Cover lightly, water and place inside at between 20-25 ?C to aid germination, place the tray in a plastic bag.
Sow January-March.
Germination can be slow with some hot peppers.

As soon as seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out.
Transplant the seedlings into small individual pots. Use rich compost and keep the plants between 20-30 Celsius during the growing season.

For best production keep the plants in the Greenhouse, Polytunnel and Conservatory. Regular feeding is recommended.
